Midjourney

AI image generation at its finest

Midjourney is the one tool on this list that won't talk to you. No chat, no text answers, no explaining itself — you write a prompt, adjust parameters, and get images. That's not a minor interface detail; it's a genuinely different mental model than every chat-based tool, and it's the actual source of most beginner frustration, not image quality.

The current default, V8.2 (since July 24, 2026), is an aesthetics-and-personalization update rather than a speed release — it introduces a unified Edit Model that replaces what used to be three separate tools (Omni Reference, Character Reference, and Retexture), which is a real simplification if you'd previously bounced between those three trying to figure out which one did what you needed. It builds on V8.1's bigger architectural shift: Midjourney moved off TPU infrastructure to a GPU-native codebase, which is why native 2K image generation is now the default rather than a separate upscale step, at roughly 4-5x the render speed of older versions.

The caveat most reviews don't mention: personalization profiles improve with accumulated rating history. A brand-new account's output is measurably less tailored to "your" aesthetic than an account that's rated hundreds of images over months — so a first impression formed in your first session undersells what the tool does once it actually knows your taste.

There's no ongoing free tier — the /imagine command has been paywalled since 2023, with only a small (~20 image) mobile-app trial for new users. Budget for a subscription from day one rather than expecting to trial your way in.
