ChatGPT vs Perplexity

ChatGPT vs Perplexity

These two aren't really substitutes for the same job. ChatGPT can browse the web now, but browsing is a tool bolted onto a general-purpose chat model built primarily for generating fluent text — it decides on its own whether a question needs a search. Perplexity is organized around retrieval first: every default response pulls sources, and "where did this come from" is the primary feature, not an occasional tool call. That matters most for anything you need to verify independently rather than just receive an answer to. The caveat worth knowing either way: a citation link is not a guarantee of accuracy, just a guarantee of a paper trail — Perplexity's synthesis can still state something slightly stronger than what the linked source actually supports, so open the source for anything that matters. Where ChatGPT wins clearly is the generative half of most real work: writing the report, comparing options, and drafting the recommendation once the research is done — tasks Perplexity's retrieval-focused design isn't built to do as well.

Verdict: Use Perplexity when sourcing and verification are the actual point of the task — research, fact-checking, anything you need to defend with a citation. Use ChatGPT once you have the facts and need to produce something with them — a report, a recommendation, a piece of writing. Most real research work needs both in sequence, not one tool trying to do the other's job.
