The Best Free AI Tools Worth Your Time Right Now

Most "best free AI tools" lists don't distinguish between a tool that's actually free to use daily and a tool that's free for about ten minutes before it asks for a card number. Two of the most commonly recommended AI tools on the internet — Midjourney and Runway — fall into the second category, and belong on a "watch out" list more than a "best free" one. Here's what's actually worth bookmarking right now, and what isn't as free as it looks.

The genuinely free daily drivers

ChatGPT — as of August 6, 2026, OpenAI removed the message cap on text chat entirely for free users; it's now unlimited text conversation on the free tier, with image generation, voice, and file uploads capped separately. This is a recent change and arguably the single biggest shift in "what's actually free" this year — most existing best-of lists were written before it happened.

Perplexity — basic search is unlimited on the free plan; only its more expensive "Pro Search" mode (multi-step reasoning searches) is capped, at roughly 3–5 per day. For everyday fact-checking and quick research, you won't hit a wall.

Google Gemini / NotebookLM — the free tier gives you 100 notebooks, 50 sources per notebook, and 50 chats a day — genuinely workable limits for research and document Q&A, not a token trial. Google has announced a shift to compute-based limits later this year, so treat the exact numbers as current-as-of-writing rather than permanent.

Claude — free, but the most rationed of the major three: roughly 40 short messages a day depending on model and demand. Worth having open for its writing quality, but don't count on it as your only free option if you're a heavy daily user — pair it with ChatGPT's now-unlimited tier for volume.

DeepSeek — free with no credit card, no daily message cap in normal use. The trade-off is consistency: response speed and uptime noticeably dip during high-traffic periods, so it's a strong free option, not a reliable one for anything time-sensitive.

Canva (Magic Studio AI features) — genuinely free tier for its core AI design tools (background remover, Magic Write, basic image generation), used daily by people who never touch a paid plan. The catch is that Canva's best AI features increasingly get gated behind Canva Pro, so "free" here means "free for the basics," not "free forever for everything."

The two that don't belong on this list at all

Midjourney has had no ongoing free tier since 2023 — the `/imagine` command is paywalled from account creation. The one exception is a small trial (about 20 images) inside Midjourney's mobile app, for new users only, and it doesn't renew. If a "best free AI tools" list includes Midjourney without that caveat, it's outdated or wasn't checked.

Runway gives new accounts 125 credits — but that's a one-time grant, not a recurring monthly allowance. Once you've spent it, there's no free tier to return to; you're choosing between paid plans. It's a free trial, not a free tool, and the distinction matters if you're planning to rely on it.

Why this isn't ten tools

You'll notice this list is six, not ten. That's deliberate — padding it to a round number with tools that don't clear the "actually free, actually daily-usable" bar is exactly the kind of filler this site doesn't publish. If a seventh tool earns its place later, it gets added because it's genuinely worth your time, not because ten looks better than six.

The actual takeaway

Free-tier generosity changes fast and recently changed a lot — ChatGPT's shift alone reordered which tool deserves the "most generous free tier" title this year. Before trusting any "best free AI tools" list, including this one months from now, check the provider's current pricing page for anything you plan to rely on daily. What's accurate in August 2026 won't necessarily be accurate by the time you're reading this.
